Frequently Asked Questions

If something isn’t covered or you’d like to discuss what you’re experiencing, please contact me by phone or email. I’m always happy to help.

What can myofascial therapy help with?
Myofascial therapy has been known to help with shoulder, neck, jaw (TMJ), back and leg pain, headaches/ migraines, fibromyalgia, scar tissue, and adhesions, sciatica, chronic pain, restriction of motion, arthritis, and sports injuries. If you had past accidents, slips/falls, injuries or surgeries that have left you with chronic pain, aching or restricted range of motion then myofascial therapy might be able to help. If you have tightness or tension in any part of your body myofascial therapy might be able to help.
What should I wear to a myofascial therapy session?
Shorts for men and shorts with sports bra for women is recommended for your comfort. Or, you may undress as you would for a massage and you will be covered at all times with a sheet and blanket.
Where are you located, where should I park?

UP Myofascial Therapy is located inside Discover Chiropractic at 101 E. Quincy Street in downtown Hancock. I am an independent therapist who rents a room out of their office. Parking is either in front of the building (on the street) or in a huge parking lot on the side of the building.

What is myofascial release therapy?
Myofascial therapy is a hands on gentle treatment session designed to help soften restricted fascia/muscle bringing it back to its normal, healthy, relaxed, fluid state. The therapist finds the tight restricted areas and molds their hands into the fascia/muscle with a light stretch (like sinking into soft clay). Then gentle but firm pressure is applied for approximately 3 to 5 minutes until a release occurs. The fascia changes from a solid gel state to a liquid state after being rehydrated under sustained pressure of the therapists hands which allows the fascia system to elongate. A fascial release should help relieve pressure on pain sensitive structures and restore range of motion.
What is fascia?
“Fascia is the tough connective tissue which spreads throughout the body in a three dimensional web from head to foot without interruption. The fascia surrounds every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel and organ of the body, all the way down to the cellular level. Therefore, malfunction of the fascial system due to trauma, poor posture, or inflammation can create a binding down of the fascia, resulting in abnormal pressure on the nerves, muscles, bones or organs. This can create pain and malfunction throughout the body, sometimes with bizarre side effects and seemingly unrelated symptoms. It is thought that an extremely high percentage of people suffering from pain and/or lack of motion may be having fascial problems; but most go undiagnosed, as the importance of fascia is just now being recognized. All of the standard tests, such as x-rays, MRI’s, CAT scans, myelograms, electromyography etc. do not show fascial restrictions.”

John Barnes, PT
International lecturer, author and authority on Myofascial Release

What is fascia restriction?
A fascial restriction is the shortening, tightening or thickening (glue like) in the connective tissue caused by injury, trauma, poor posture, scarring or inflammation. These restrictions can produce up to 2,000 pounds of pressure per square inch, creating symptoms of pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, structural misalignment and limitation of movement.
